Early Childhood Education


Are you creative, energetic, and enjoy working with children?  Learn how to develop and present lesson plans to young children, spend time working at a local elementary schools, at our on-site Early Learning Center, or at other community childcare programs.  Earn hours towards the 480 hours of training required to apply for your Child Development Associate Credential.

Criteria for Admission:  Criminal Clearance, Child Abuse Clearance, Physical, Mantoux TB test, 2 letters of reference.

Certifications:  Child Development Associate Credential, Pediatric First Aid

Expectations of students in the program: 

  • Be a good role model throughout the school
  • Practice safe habits at all times
  • Demonstrate self-discipline
  • Display a positive attitude and give your best effort
  • Be a team player
  • Use appropriate language

Students will master competencies in the childcare curriculum, which will include:

  • Health and safety
  • Personal qualities and careers
  • DHS regulations
  • Child development
  • Selecting learning activities
  • Literacy
  • Child assessment
  • Program partnerships
  • Clinical experience
  • Crime and violence prevention

Opportunities after High School

Careers with a high school diploma:  Assistant group supervisor, teaching assistant, nanny

Careers with CDA credential: Group supervisor, family child care provider (available at Penn State York, Harrisburg Area Community College, PA College of Technology.)

Careers with 4 years of post-secondary training:  Teacher, special education teacher, center director, guidance counselor, child advocate, licensing specialist (available at Penn State, Millersville, Shippensburg, York College.)

Careers with 4 years+ of post-secondary training: Social worker, psychologist, school administration.

There are several programs that can provide you with ways to earn a college degree in less time and for less money.  One way is through SOAR – Students Occupationally and Academically Ready.  These are free college credits earned while at York Tech.  These are called articulated credits and these can save you time and money.  Please click below to see the credits you are eligible to earn through this program.
