< Back Carpentry Overview The Carpentry program covers the major aspects of residential and light commercial construction as well as a variety of remodeling functions. Students will work with a diverse array of building and finishing materials in order to become familiar with proper methods. Training is given using hand tools, power tools, and other portable equipment. Onsite and offsite construction projects are incorporated into the classroom instruction. Possible Certifications OSHA Certification, Construction Potential Career Opportunities What to Expect Students interested in this program will take courses in Carpentry, Construction Trades, Electrical Occupations, and HVAC for the first marking period. After the first marking period, students will apply for full-time entrance into one of the four programs, and they will be accepted based on merit and other criteria. Students who are not approved for their first choice will be assigned to one of the other three programs included in the rotation. Careers Uniform Students at York Tech are required to wear a uniform at all times. While in their shop classes, they must wear the uniform designated by the program instructor. At all other times, students may wear their shop uniform OR York Tech apparel, which is sold through the School Store and the Fan Shop . Please review the Student Handbook for a full explanation of the dress code. The specific uniform requirements for Carpentry can be viewed below. All items that are hyperlinked must be purchased from the online store associated with the link. Items not hyperlinked may be purchased from any retailer, unless noted otherwise. < Back Red Ribbon Week Students and staff will be encouraged to show their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle during Red Ribbon Week 2024, which will be held Oct. 28 to Nov. 1. Exciting activities will promote a message of health and well-being. Here’s what is planned: Monday, Oct. 28 Bracelets will be handed out by SkillsUSA officers and counselors. Tuesday, Oct. 29 Students will be invited to sign the oath of solidarity in the cafeteria. Those who sign might win a prize! Wednesday, Oct. 30 Students and staff can participate in the “Lei Off Drugs” theme by wearing a Hawaiian lei. Friday, Nov. 1 Everyone may dress in red from head to toe. All other dress code rules must be followed. Remember, Red Ribbon Week is not just about dressing up; it’s a reminder of the importance of making healthy choices and standing against drug use. The acts included dancing, singing, instrumental music, and more. At the end of the night, it was clear that Spartan Nation is filled with incredibly artistic individuals! Thank you to Ms. Wilson, Mr. Spahr, and everyone else who coordinated this fantastic event. [Photos ] Holiday Meal — Earlier this week, some of our Culinary Arts students cooked a holiday meal and served it at Shadowfax Corporation, a non-profit organization that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. [Photos ] Welding Visitors — Angelica Grothe '22 and Frank LeClaire visited our Welding & Metal Fabrication program on Dec. 7, 2023, to share their metallurgy knowledge and demonstrate GMAW and SMAW techniques using an electric arc welder. They both work for ESAB North America, a world leader in welding and cutting equipment. We're always proud to host our alumni, like Ms. Grothe, as guest speakers! [Photos ] Career Fair — York Tech’s Adult & Continuing Education Center held a Healthcare Career Fair on Tuesday, Dec. 12, and over 20 employers were in attendance. Practical nursing, medical assistant, nurse aide, and phlebotomy students were invited to meet with employers and learn about job openings and career pathways. [Photos ] Medical Professions — Students in Ms. Stonesifer's Medical Professions classes were busy this week. First, three students visited Senior Commons at Powder Mill on Dec. 13. They spread holiday cheer throughout the building by caroling for the residents! Then, the Pharmacy Technician class took a field trip to UPMC York Hospital on Dec. 14. Students toured the hospital, learned more about specialized equipment, and spoke with unit directors. [Photo ] Athletics Updates — The bowling team swept Donegal on Dec. 8 thanks to a three-game pin total of 3,442, which is three pins shy of the school record. Later that evening, the wrestling team downed Schuylkill Valley by a score of 57-18, and the JV girls’ basketball squad earned a 29-17 victory over Lancaster Mennonite. The bowling team was back in action on Dec. 11 and secured a 5-0 win against Eastern York. The next day, JV boys’ basketball took down Bermudian Springs. Finally, our wrestlers took home another win on Dec. 14, this time blanking Fairfield 75-0. Dr. Rogers and a group of students did just that by traveling to the State Capitol on Feb. 6 to share their stories with three legislators: Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill, Rep. Kate Klunk, and Rep. Wendy Fink. Additionally, the students were able to observe preparations for Gov. Shapiro's budget address and see the beginning stages of a peaceful protest outside the East Wing. [Photos ] Need to Know Black History Month — In honor of Black History Month, we’d like to highlight 38 Black pioneers, inventors, entrepreneurs, and others who have positively impacted many aspects of life. [Posters ] Conferences — Parent-teacher conferences for the second semester will be conducted from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15. This round of conferences will be for both technical and academic classes; school counselors will not be available. All meetings will be conducted virtually. Pre-registration is required and can be completed by using the instructions available at ycst.info/ptc23 . Report Cards — Report cards for the second marking period are available in Skyward. [Skyward ] Senior Class Photo — A group photo of the Class of 2024 will be taken in the Fieldhouse during intervention on Wednesday, Feb. 14. All seniors should plan on attending. Game of the Week Feb. 13 — Winter Track Invitational, @West Chester Henderson H.S. , 2:30 p.m. Spartans in Action School Counseling Week — Feb. 5-9 is National School Counseling Week, and we're fortunate to have six tremendous counselors: Nola Bassett, Dylan Maxwell, Shante Morant, Estrella Pizarro, Bruce Riley, and Samuel Shaw. These individuals guide our Spartans through stressful personal issues, course scheduling, post-graduation planning, and many other critical situations. He explained how the power grid works and shared possible job opportunities with PPL. A second guest from Asplundh talked about job opportunities related to servicing the automation in substations. This time, Aleena Edwards (bass clarinet), Jonathan DeArment (trumpet), and Xander Roberts (percussion) participated in the 2024 York County High School Honors Band, which was hosted by Northeastern High School and Central York High School on Feb. 2-3. The group worked with Dr. Inkster, a guest conductor from York College, before concluding the festival with an outstanding concert. Richard performed very well for Lock Haven University by earning some much-needed points in the long jump (fourth place, 20’ 9.75”). He is also excelling in the classroom as a biomedical science major. Catching up with alumni and learning about their successes is one of many reasons why we love being Spartans! She is currently ranked third in the county in two different events. [Video ] News & Notes Volleyball Camps — Our volleyball staff recently partnered with AllAmerican Volleyball Camps to host two camps at York Tech. We're proud of the campers, who demonstrated wonderful attitudes and tremendous growth during these multi-day events! [Photos ] Preschool Openings — The LIU preschool located at York Tech is accepting enrollments. This program is specifically for 4-year-old preschoolers. Donations Needed — The Hub is a resource center at York Tech that contains free clothing, school supplies, and other essentials for students in need. Donations help to keep The Hub stocked. Questions can be directed to slittle@ytech.edu and dhawkins@ytech.edu . Adult Education — York Tech’s Adult & Continuing Education Center began a new round of full-time programs on Tuesday, Aug. 22. There are currently over 100 students in a variety of programs, including welding, dental assistant, mechatronics, cosmetology, automotive, medical assistant, and HVAC. Football Preview — The varsity football team will play its first game today, Aug. 25. We recently caught up with two of the team's seniors, KingZion Matai and Pearce Alleyne, to get their thoughts on the upcoming season. Check out this video to learn more about what to expect from this year’s squad. Homecoming Information — The 2023 homecoming football game and dance will occur on Saturday, Oct. 14. The home game against Fairfield will begin at 10 a.m., and the dance will take place from 6-9 p.m. at York County School of Technology. Students can look forward to Spirit Week and a pep rally prior to the dance. Picture Day — All student pictures, including those for seniors, will be taken on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Students should wear their uniforms on picture day. They will have the opportunity to change into a school-appropriate shirt of their choice for pictures. < Back Electrical Occupations Overview Students in the Electrical Occupations program learn to safely install electrical systems in residential and commercial industrial buildings, read and understand blueprints, wire a variety of receptacles and outlet boxes, and mount electrical panels. The hands-on learning is supplemented with the study of electricity theory and how to operate and repair electric motors and electro-mechanical controls. Possible Certifications Pre-Apprenticeship Completion Certificate S/P2 Construction OSHA Certification, Construction Heartsaver AED Heartsaver CPR Arc Flash Certification Digital Multimeter Basics Interim Credentials Completion Certificate Potential Career Opportunities What to Expect Students interested in this program will take courses in Carpentry, Construction Trades, Electrical Occupations, and HVAC for the first marking period. After the first marking period, students will apply for full-time entrance into one of the four programs, and they will be accepted based on merit and other criteria. Students who are not approved for their first choice will be assigned to one of the other three programs included in the rotation. Careers Uniform Students at York Tech are required to wear a uniform at all times. While in their shop classes, they must wear the uniform designated by the program instructor. At all other times, students may wear their shop uniform OR York Tech apparel, which is sold through the School Store and the Fan Shop . Please review the Student Handbook for a full explanation of the dress code. The specific uniform requirements for Electrical Occupations can be viewed below. All items that are hyperlinked must be purchased from the online store associated with the link. Items not hyperlinked may be purchased from any retailer, unless noted otherwise.
