< Back Commercial & Advertising Art Overview Students will prepare a portfolio throughout the program to promote their work and talent when they graduate. The major emphasis is on the basic principles of design and elements of art through skill development and exploring different media. Special emphasis is placed on manual as well as computer illustration, layout, composition, and design skills. Students will prepare graphic and advertising projects from the idea stage through to the web/pre-press. The students will be using industry software throughout this course, progressing from basic skills to advanced skills. Possible Certifications Adobe Certification Adobe Certified Associate, Indesign Adobe Certified Associate, Photoshop Adobe Certified Associate, Illustrator Potential Career Opportunities What to Expect Students interested in this program will take courses in Commercial & Advertising Art and Communication Technology for the first two school years. After sophomore year, students will apply for full-time entrance into one of the two programs, and they will be accepted based on merit and other criteria. Students who are not approved for their first choice will be assigned to the other program included in the rotation. Careers Uniform Students at York Tech are required to wear a uniform at all times. While in their shop classes, they must wear the uniform designated by the program instructor. At all other times, students may wear their shop uniform OR York Tech apparel, which is sold through the School Store and the Fan Shop . Please review the Student Handbook for a full explanation of the dress code. The specific uniform requirements for Commercial & Advertising Art can be viewed below. Important Dates Aug. 12 — Uniform Deadline (Info ↓) Aug. 14 — Back-to-School Night (Info ↓) Aug. 19 — New Students Report Aug. 20 — All Students Report Activity Bus Changes The routes and stops for the evening activity buses have changed for the 2025-26 school year. Please visit the Transportation Department’s web page and click on the Activity Buses section to review the new stops for each activity bus and learn more about how these buses serve York Tech students. Attendance Procedures Please visit ytech.edu/attendance to learn about properly reporting student absences, early dismissals, and tardiness. Back-to-School Night All new students and their families are invited to attend Back-to-School Night on Aug. 14 from 5-8 p.m. Please review the parking map before arrival. Since this event is for first-year students, upperclassmen should reach out to their counselors by phone or email with scheduling questions. Before Aug. 14, parents and caregivers should review students’ schedules in Skyward. (Directions for accessing schedules can be found in the Skyward Access section of this letter.) During the event, students will visit with teachers, stop by various informational stations, pick up their laptops, and receive their Spartan JAM shirts. First Day for New Students All new students entering Grades 9-10 will begin school on Aug. 19. The day will include a unique event called Spartan JAM and other orientation activities. Please read the Spartan Jam letter prior to Aug. 19 for important details about the day’s dress requirements and itinerary. Free and Reduced Meals A new free and reduced-price meal application must be submitted every school year for qualified families, even if an application was approved last school year. Additionally, both York Tech and a family’s home school district must receive a new free and reduced-price meal application, if the family has students attending both York Tech and the home school district. Laptop Distribution Student laptops will be distributed to new students during Back-to-School Night on Aug. 14. New students unable to attend Back-to-School Night can pick up their laptops in the I.T. Department from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Aug. 15 or Aug. 18. (If picking up on Aug. 15 or Aug. 18, please enter Door 1, which faces Pauline Drive.) Remaining laptops will be distributed to students on Aug. 19, the first day of school for new students. All students should bring their school-issued laptops with them on the first day of school. Meningitis Vaccine for Seniors The Pennsylvania Department of Health requires all seniors to receive their second meningitis vaccine (MenACWY) by no later than five days after the start of the 2025-26 school year. Failure to provide documentation of the vaccine will result in the student being excluded from school until documentation is received. (Parents and caregivers whose students have not provided vaccine verification received a letter and phone call from the school nurse.) Questions may be directed to the school nurse at smelhorn@ytech.edu or 717-741-0820 x5124. Nicotine-Free Campus As you may be aware, a vape shop called Tobacco Hut recently opened next to York Tech. Unfortunately, there are no laws or ordinances that prevent this type of business from operating adjacent to a school campus. Please remind your student that York Tech is a smoke-, vape-, and nicotine-free campus. Students, regardless of age, are not permitted to possess or use nicotine products or electronic nicotine delivery systems in any form while on school property, school transportation, bus stops, or at school-related activities, on or off school property. Professional Dress Technical uniforms are an important part of the professional culture at York Tech. They promote school spirit, cultivate a sense of belonging, and contribute to an environment focused on learning. As such, all students are required to abide by the professional dress requirements each school day. Dress code requirements can be found in the Student Handbook . School Calendar The school calendar can be found at ytech.edu/calendar . Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bookmark this link for future reference. School Communication ParentSquare — The majority of all communication will now be distributed via ParentSquare, a school-to-home communication platform. Parents and caregivers will not need to take action in order to receive communication through ParentSquare. However, managing individual communication preferences and utilizing all of ParentSquare’s capabilities will require registering with ParentSquare and/or downloading the platform’s app. Visit ytech.edu/comms-pr and click on the ParentSquare drop down for details about registering with ParentSquare and downloading the app. Spartan Review — York Tech utilizes the Spartan Review newsletter to share almost all calendar reminders and important informational items with families. This weekly e-newsletter is sent through ParentSquare, and it will come from an email address ending in @parentsquare.com. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to whitelist @parentsquare.com to ensure all messages are received. Social Media — York Tech's social media accounts are used to share the many student accomplishments and interesting activities that occur during the school year. School Day Entry & Dismissal Students will be admitted into the building on school days at 7:40 a.m. The warning bell will ring at 8:05 a.m., and students must be in their home room at 8:10 a.m. Dismissal will be at 3 p.m. each day. School Supplies Required supplies for technical programs can be found on each program’s web page under the uniform subsection. A list of supplies for all other classes will be provided to students by teachers after the start of the school year. Skyward Access The following information is now available in Skyward , unless noted otherwise: Required Online Forms — Parents and caregivers should first log in to Skyward and, for each student enrolled at York Tech, complete the two required forms, which are the Annual Student Intake Form and the Annual Health Form. (They are highlighted in this Skyward screenshot .) A student’s schedule will not be accessible until the required forms are completed. Schedules — Student schedules will be available in the Schedule section of Skyward AFTER a student’s parents or caregivers complete the required forms, which are referenced above. Bus Transportation — Bus stop locations and pick-up times can be found in the Transportation section of Skyward. Students should arrive at their stops 10 minutes prior to the listed pick-up time. If the bus is running late, students should wait at the stop for 20 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time. Student Lockers — Student locker numbers and combinations will be found under the Student Profile section of Skyward. Student Parking Permits — Parents and caregivers can complete the online parking permit form through Skyward. The parking permit application cannot be submitted by students, and printed forms are no longer accepted. Students are permitted to park in the designated student areas outlined on the parking lot map . Cafeteria — All students will receive free breakfast during the 2025-26 school year. Parents and caregivers may put money in students’ cafeteria accounts by using Skyward. Click on the Food Service tile and select the Click Here button to make a payment. Information on cafeteria services, including free and reduced meal forms, can be found on the Food Services page of our website. Senior Open Lunch Permission Form — Eligible seniors who wish to receive an open lunch must have a parent or caregiver complete the Senior Open Lunch Permission Form through Skyward. Student Cell Phone Use Please review the Student Handbook with your child, specifically the section regarding York Tech’s policy for the use of electronic devices in school. Limiting the use of cell phones is critical to maintaining distraction-free learning environments. Student Pictures Student pictures for the 2025-26 school year will be taken during school hours on Aug. 26 (Grades 9-12), Aug. 28 (senior portraits), and Sept. 25 (retakes). More information about 2025-26 student pictures can be found on our website. Uniform Deadline All uniform purchases must be made through the online School Store . Those wishing to place a uniform order and pick it up before the first day of school must submit the online order no later than noon on Aug. 12. Orders placed by this deadline will be available for pickup during Back-to-School Night on Aug. 14. < Back Spartan Jam 2025 Overview We are excited to welcome new Spartans into the York Tech community! As part of our orientation activities, we will be conducting New Student Day and Spartan JAM on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025, for all new students entering Grades 9-10. These students will be transported to York Tech via the regular bus schedule. Itinerary The day will be broken into two parts. In the morning, students will meet new friends and prepare for a successful school year by participating in our Spartan JAM program. The second part of the day will include a complete schedule walk through, which will give students opportunities to interact with their teachers and classmates. Upon arrival, students will report to their technical area for a light breakfast, important document and material distribution, and an overview of the day’s schedule. (Faculty and staff will help students locate their technical areas.) Afterward, students will report to their assigned classrooms to meet their Spartan JAM leaders and teammates. Purpose Spartan JAM is a high-energy learning adventure during which the Class of 2029 (along with new students entering Grade 10) will gain an experiential understanding of collaboration, communication, trust and support, creative problem solving, effective decision making, and leading and following. Students will be divided into teams and complete a large number of fun activities. Teams find ways to manage time, work together, value differences, utilize resources, and celebrate successes. Lunch At the conclusion of Spartan JAM and prior to the schedule walk through, students will be provided a school lunch, issued their school laptop (if they did not already receive it during Back-to-School Night), and participate in a gallery walk of all the sports and clubs York Tech has to offer. Lunch will be free of charge for all students, and an alternate choice will be available for those with special dietary restrictions. Preparation In order to prepare for the activities planned, we ask students to: Wear closed-toe, active footwear/sneakers and weather-appropriate pants. While shorts are a violation of the York Tech dress code during the school year, they are permitted on Aug. 19. Wear the free Spartan JAM shirt. Students who do not pick up their shirt at Back-to-School Night will receive one on Aug. 19. Closing It is our hope that students will use the lessons learned on this day and become a valuable contributor to the positive learning environment at York Tech. Additionally, new students will be comfortable and motivated to begin the year after gaining a clear understanding of what it means to be a York Tech Spartan. < Back Harry Potter at York Tech The much-anticipated play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: High School Edition is coming to York. Broadway Licensing Global announced on Tuesday, Feb. 13, that 29 United States schools were selected to perform the play’s first official stagings. York County School of Technology is one of those schools, and, as the only Pennsylvania school selected, it will have exclusive in-state rights to the performance from Oct. 15-Nov. 10, 2024. The chosen schools all participated in Broadway Licensing Global’s Wands at the Ready contest. Submission requirements included describing why entrants’ schools would be the most magical place to perform the new Harry Potter adaptation. York Tech partners with the Weary Arts Group (WAG) to produce its plays and musicals. Calvin Weary, WAG’s founder and CEO, was thrilled with the news. “Bringing this beloved story to life on our stage isn't just an opportunity; it's a privilege to ignite imaginations and inspire our community." Thanks to Weary and Brandon May, teacher and Drama Club advisor, York Tech’s theater programming has grown considerably over the last six years. The once dormant Drama Club now boasts over 140 members and offers multiple must-see shows each school year. In many ways, being selected to perform Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: High School Edition is the ultimate validation of a successful turnaround. “York Tech’s Drama Club epitomizes diversity and inclusivity,” said May. “Students enrolled in our 26 different technical programs have found a common passion for theater. That passion has propelled the Drama Club forward to this point and will be the impetus that transforms it into a magical world of witchcraft and wizardry next fall.” Nick Staab, York Tech’s communications and public relations coordinator, added, “The Drama Club members are incredibly talented, so they’ve been performing well-known plays and musicals for years.
