Many individuals and organizations came together to present the club with a customized trailer in honor of Daniel "Swish" Swisher, who was a great advocate for educating youth about the automotive industry. The club members and Mr. Todd Kessler, an Automotive Technology instructor and HROT advisor at York Tech, were blown away by the generosity. Thank you so much to everyone involved with this amazing gesture! [Video ] [Photos ] Need to Know Inclement Weather Reminders — As we move closer to winter, the likelihood of a closing, delay, or early dismissal due to inclement weather increases. If it becomes necessary to alter the school day or close school, parents and caregivers will be informed via phone and email. Additionally, an email will be sent to students’ school-issued email accounts. Depending on the circumstances, students may be required to participate in a Flexible Instruction Day (FID) — also referred to as a virtual learning day — when school is closed. Game of the Week Dec. 12 — JV & Varsity Boys’ Basketball, @York Tech, 6 & 7:30 p.m. Spartans in Action Healthcare Collaboration — This week, our Adult & Continuing Education Center, in conjunction with the York County Literacy Council, hosted a free Healthcare Pathways course for 15 adult learners from across York County. These students will begin our Practical Nursing program in January, and the Healthcare Pathways course gives them a head start by covering several key subjects, including medical math, anatomy and physiology, and workplace skills. We can't wait to watch these Spartans as they progress toward rewarding nursing careers! [Photos ] Police Drone — We were privileged to host Cpl. Kohler from the York County Sheriff's Office on Thursday, Dec. 7. He met with students in our Criminal Justice program and demonstrated a police drone, which is used for a variety of tasks, including searching for missing persons, traffic crash reconstruction, forensic investigations, and much more. Thank you, Cpl. Kohler! [Photos ] Holiday Gift Bags — Students in our Medical Professions program made holiday gift bags on Dec. 8, which will be distributed to residents of Pleasant Acres Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. The bags contain personal items, sweet treats, and positive messages that we hope will spread holiday cheer throughout the facility. Megan Abel '23 is the activities director at Pleasant Acres, and she collaborated with Ms. Hawkins, one of our Medical Professions instructors, to make this initiative a reality. We're very thankful to have alumni, teachers, and students who make giving back to the community a priority! [Photos ] HROT in Indy — Two of York Tech’s Hot Rodders of Tomorrow (HROT) teams have been in Indianapolis since Dec. 5 competing during the 2023 Performance Racing Industry Trade Show. The competition involves disassembling and reassembling engines as quickly and precisely as possible. So far, the two groups have finished second and fifth out of 15 all-star teams, which qualifies them to compete in the Elite 10 this weekend. < Back Spirit Week 2024 This year's Spirit Week will be Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4. Below is a list of the themes and, when applicable, a breakdown of which grades have been assigned specific decades or colors. All students are encouraged to participate and show their school spirit! Themes Monday, Sept. 30 — Sports Jersey Day Tuesday, Oct. 1 — Twin Day Wednesday, Oct. 2 — Decades Day Grade 9: 1970s Grade 10: 1980s Grade 11: 1990s Grade 12: 2000s Thursday, Oct. 3 — Super Hero Day (No Capes) Friday, Oct. 4 — York Tech Apparel Day Grade 9: Gray Grade 10: White Grade 11: Green Grade 12: Black Trivia Each day, the Student Council will set up trivia tables during lunch periods. Students who participate in trivia will earn the chance to win a prize during the Pep Rally. Pep Rally The Pep Rally will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4. (This is an in-school event and is not open to the public.) Students will leave their belongings in their fourth period classroom. At the conclusion of the study, the firm will provide options for how to increase the number of students York Tech can serve, while also solving operational issues presented by the school’s layout. [More ] Need to Know FAFSA Info Night — Current York Tech seniors and their parents or caregivers are invited to attend a free, virtual financial aid (FAFSA) informational event on Oct. 16. [More ] Senior Caps and Gowns — We have partnered with Student Services Company to provide York Tech seniors with custom caps and gowns and other official graduation products. [More ] Winter Sports Meetings — All student-athletes interested in playing a winter sport should plan to attend the winter sports meetings during intervention on Oct. 16. The meeting location for each sport will be shared during morning announcements and displayed on the lobby TVs closer to Oct. 16. Students may only attend one meeting, and anyone interested in being a manager should also attend. Student-athletes must have a sports physical on the proper PIAA form dated May 1 or later to participate. The forms can be found at the following link. After much anticipation, the 2024-25 school year is fully underway. As students returned on Aug. 21, they were greeted by Dr. Rogers, York Tech's administrative director, and Mr. Pavlovich, our Communication Technology instructor. Dr. Rogers brought the energy by fist bumping students and sharing words of encouragement, while Mr. Pavlovich contributed to the upbeat atmosphere from behind a mobile DJ station. [Photos ] New Students Arrive — We were thrilled to welcome new students entering Grades 9-10 on Aug. 20. They participated in a unique event called Spartan Jam, which encouraged them to make connections with their peers through a series of fun activities. It was the perfect way to start a new school year! [Photos ] Need to Know Picture Days — Picture days for the 2024-25 school year will be held on Aug. 27, Aug. 30, and Oct. 17. [Details ] Open Lunches for Seniors — This year, open lunch eligibility forms must be completed online in Skyward by a parent or caregiver. Once the application is submitted and subsequently approved by a staff member, the open lunch card will be available for pickup in the Attendance Office. More information about open lunch and its eligibility requirements can be found on page 10 of the Student Handbook. [Skyward ] [Student Handbook ] Part-Time Preschool at York Tech — The Lincoln Intermediate Unit uses space at York Tech to offer part-time preschool services. There are currently openings for four-year-old preschoolers. The cost is $40 per month. Call 717-741-0820 x5603 for more information. Parent-Teacher Conferences — Conferences for the first semester will be conducted from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25. This round of conferences is specifically for academic classes, not technical classes. All conferences will be conducted virtually. < Back Medical Professions Overview This program provides a foundation for students and helps them make informed career decisions. Students complete the foundation courses during the first two years at York Tech, which cover orientation and safety, nutrition and hydration, medical terminology, human body rehabilitation, restoration diseases and disorders, basic clinical skills, mathematics in allied health, legal and ethical issues, emergency care, and disaster preparedness. After completion of the foundation courses, students select a specialty area on which to focus during Grades 11-12. They can select from advanced simulation medical technologies, patient care technology, and nursing career preparedness. Students accepted into it will take Medical Professions courses during all four years at York Tech, with the exception being students who participate in a co-op opportunity during their senior year. Careers Uniform Students at York Tech are required to wear a uniform at all times. While in their shop classes, they must wear the uniform designated by the program instructor. At all other times, students may wear their shop uniform OR York Tech apparel, which is sold through the School Store and the Fan Shop . Please review the Student Handbook for a full explanation of the dress code. The specific uniform requirements for Medical Professions can be viewed below. All items that are hyperlinked must be purchased from the online store associated with the link. Items not hyperlinked may be purchased from any retailer, unless noted otherwise. < Back Transportation Update As of 2:30 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 9, morning bus stops and estimated pick-up times for primary bus assignments are available in Skyward . Afternoon route times are not yet available, although it's important to note that afternoon routes typically run in reverse order, meaning the last student picked up in the morning is the first student dropped off after school. Bus drivers will adjust afternoon routes if students aren't riding, so afternoon drop-off times can vary. Secondary bus assignments, which do not apply to everyone, are still a work in prograss and will be uploaded into Skyward once they are complete. We anticipate that they'll be available at some point next week. Finally, below are several important reminders about bus transportation. Please review them with your child. Students should be at their bus stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time and, if the bus doesn't arrive immediately, wait at least 20 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time. There will be no changes to bus routes during the first few days of school. The pick-up times during the first week or two of school could fluctuate as routes are adjusted. Any changes will be communicated with families by school personnel or the bus drivers. Bus routing can be a complicated task. When requesting changes, please be patient. The beginning of a new school year is a very busy time for the Transportation Department. < Back Class Ring Ordering Information Students in Grades 10-12 who wish to purchase and receive their class ring in time for the holidays must submit an order no later than Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023. Below is a letter from Student Services Company, York Tech's class ring provider, with additional information. Dear Parents, York Tech students are getting ready to order their official York County School of Technology class rings. A time-honored tradition, your student will wear their custom class ring with pride for years to come! The program is introduced to the sophomore class, but juniors and seniors are invited to participate as well, if they haven't already. Please take a moment to view this short class ring presentation . Congratulations to our newest alumni, and good luck with your rewarding nursing careers! [Photos ] NAHB Contest — We recently visited Mr. Bryant's Architecture & Construction Technology class. Matthew Keller and Hayden Miller were working on architectural drawings for their team’s 2024 National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Competition submission. This year's contest requires students to develop a complete set of working drawings, detailed cost estimates, and a comprehensive construction schedule for a residential housing project in Park City, Utah. [Photos ] Athletics Updates — The bowling team earned a 5-0 victory over New Oxford on Dec. 15, and the varsity girls’ basketball team outlasted Hanover by a score of 53-46 that same evening. The next day, our Spartan wrestlers earned several medals during the Pequea Valley Tournament. Junior high boys’ basketball faced Dover on Dec. 18, and the squad squeaked out a 35-33 win after a back-and-forth contest. Unified bocce was also in action on Dec. 18, and the team defeated Central York by a final score of 3-1. The bowling team rounded out the week by shutting out Kennard-Dale on Dec. 20. After the third marking period, students will apply for full-time entrance into one of the two programs, and they will be accepted based on merit and other criteria. Students who are not approved for their first choice will be assigned to the other program included in the rotation. Careers Uniform Students at York Tech are required to wear a uniform at all times. While in their shop classes, they must wear the uniform designated by the program instructor. At all other times, students may wear their shop uniform OR York Tech apparel, which is sold through the School Store and the Fan Shop . Please review the Student Handbook for a full explanation of the dress code. The specific uniform requirements for Precision Machining Technology can be viewed below. All items that are hyperlinked must be purchased from the online store associated with the link. Items not hyperlinked may be purchased from any retailer, unless noted otherwise. Students, instructors, and alumni from six of our technical programs collaborated to design and construct two 14-foot-tall statues and the brick pedestals on which they stand. The Spartan statues were hoisted into place on Feb. 8, where they will greet visitors entering our outdoor stadium for many years to come. The technical programs involved in this project included Architecture & Construction Management, Carpentry, Construction Trades, Engineering & Advanced Manufacturing, Precision Machining Technology, and Welding & Metal Fabrication. Thank you to everyone who made this idea become a reality! In-School Tutoring — The NHS Spartan Study Buddies program is available to students who may need assistance with coursework. [Form ] Game of the Week Feb. 21 — Unified Bocce vs. Dover, @Dover Area H.S., 3:30 p.m. Spartans in Action CTE Month — February is Career & Technical Education Month. As part of the celebration, TechLink, a consortium for career and technical education, produced several videos highlighting CTE teachers. York Tech was represented in the videos by instructor Todd Kessler and two students: Ava Sloan and Calvin Elicker. They did a fantastic job! Shorter versions of this video will air on WGAL throughout February. [Video ] Welsh Finds Podium — Congratulations to Zoe Welsh for earning a spot on the podium during the YAIAA Swimming Championships! She finished fourth in the freestyle on Friday, Feb. 9, and third in the breaststroke on Saturday, Feb. 10. We're proud of her continued success throughout the season, especially considering this is her first time competing at the high school level! [Video ] Grant Presentation — Shawn Harty, a sales engineer with Big Daishowa, visited York Tech on Feb. 8 to officially present a $3,950 grant on behalf of York Precision Machining & Hydraulics . This very generous contribution will purchase new equipment from Big Daishowa for our Precision Machining Technology program. We’re so thankful to these companies for supporting our talented students! [Photos ] Social Studies Simulations — Last week, Ms. Arvelo and Mr. Alwood completed two simulations with their social studies classes. First, a stock market challenge helped to demonstrate the effects of buying and selling stock. When the market crashed, students had to run to the bank and attempt to retrieve their money before it was gone! Next, they simulated how people lived with very little money during the Great Depression. Students started wealthy, but, as the decade continued, they lost their homes, children, and some ended up in jail. We're proud of the creative learning happening in Ms. Arvelo and Mr. Alwood’s classroom! [Photos ] CNT Challenge — A group of five York Tech students placed second during HACC’s annual Computer Networking Technology (CNT) Challenge Day on Friday, Feb. 9. During this one-day event, technical schools compete in progressively harder computer networking challenges related to building a company network. The tasks included router configuration, cable making, troubleshooting, and more. Congratulations to the five team members: Alexander Lukens, Carter Sprinkle, Brandon Krout, David Ayeni, and Ryan German! [Photos ] Open Forum — Several York Tech administrators, teachers, and students had the opportunity to attend an open forum hosted by Judd Pittman, the new director of the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Bureau of Career and Technical Education. The event, which coincided perfectly with CTE Month, was held at HACC on Thursday, Feb. 15, and included networking, roundtable discussions, enrichment activities, and more. [Photos ] Athletics Updates — Our bowlers finished their regular season on Friday, Feb. 9, with a 4-1 home win over Spring Grove. The victory improved the squad’s overall record to 13-3.
